Further evidence for intra - night optical variability of radio - quiet quasars

چکیده
Although well established for BL Lac objects and radio-loud quasars, the occurrence of intra-night optical variability (INOV) in radio-quiet quasars is still debated, primarily since only a handful of INOV events with good statistical significance, albeit small amplitude, have been reported so far. This has motivated us to continue intra-night optical monitoring of bona-fide radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). Here we present the results for a sample of 11 RQQs monitored by us on 19 nights. On 5 of these nights a given RQQ was monitored simultaneously from two well separated observatories. In all, two clear cases and two probable case of INOV were detected. From these data, we estimate an INOV duty cycle of ∼8% for RQQs which would increase to 19% if the ‘probable variable’ cases are also included. Such comparatively small INOV duty cycles for RQQs, together with the small INOV amplitudes (∼1%), are in accord with the previously deduced characteristics of this phenomenon.

Intranight optical variability of Blazars
We present results of a multi-epoch intra-night optical monitoring of eleven blazars consisting of six BL Lac objects and five radio core-dominated quasars (CDQs). These densely sampled and sensitive R-band CCD observations, carried out from November 1998 through May 2002 during a total of 47 nights with an average of 6.5 hours/night, have enabled us to detect variability amplitudes as low as ∼...
متن کاملTerm Optical Variability in Broad Absorption Line QSOs
We present the first results from a pilot programme to monitor the short term optical variability in Broad Absorption Line system QSOs. Intra-night optical variations of ∼ 5% were detected on time scales of ∼ one hour in QSOs 0846+156 and 0856+172. Further, the mean magnitude level decreased in the two objects by ∼ 0.05 and ∼ 0.15 magnitude respectively during the period of our observations. Th...
متن کاملIntra-night Optical Variability of BL Lacs, Radio-Quiet Quasars and Radio-Loud Quasars
We report monitoring observations of 20 high-luminosity AGN, 12 of which are radioquiet quasars (RQQs). Intra-night optical variability (INOV) was detected for 13 of the 20 objects, including 5 RQQs. The variations are distinctly stronger and more frequent for blazars than for the other AGN classes. By combining these data with results obtained earlier in our program, we have formed an enlarged...
متن کاملIntranight optical variability of radio-quiet and radio lobe dominated quasars
We present results of a programme of multi-epoch, intra-night optical monitoring of a sample of non-blazar type AGN, which includes seven radio-quiet QSOs (RQQs) and an equal number of radio-loud, lobe-dominated quasars (LDQs), covering a redshift range from about 0.2 to 2.0. These two sets of optically bright and intrinsically luminous QSOs are well matched in the redshift–optical luminosity (...

We present the results of a comparative study of the intra-night optical variability (INOV) characteristics of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars, which involves a systematic intra-night optical monitoring of seven sets of high luminosity AGNs covering the redshift range z ≃ 0.2 to z ≃ 2.2. The sample, matched in the optical luminosity – redshift (MB – z) plane, consists of seven radio-quiet qu...
